지난 시간에 이어서 오스카 와일드의 『행복한 왕자(The Happy Prince)』를 함께 읽어봅시다. 우리말이 원문에서는 어떻게 쓰였을지 생각하면서 읽어봅시다.

“Who are you?” he said.

“I am the Happy Prince.”

“Why are you weeping then?” asked the Swallow; “you have quite drenched me.”

“When I was alive and had a human heart,” answered the statue, “I did not know what tears were, for I lived in the Palace of Sans-Souci, where sorrow is not allowed to enter. In the daytime I played with my companions in the garden, and in the evening I led the dance in the Great Hall. Round the garden ran a very lofty wall, but I never cared to ask what lay beyond it, everything about me was so beautiful. My courtiers called me the Happy Prince, and happy indeed I was, if pleasure be happiness. So I lived, and so I died. And now that I am dead they have set me up here so high that I can see all the ugliness and all the misery of my city, and though my heart is made of lead yet I ~할 수밖에 없다 weep.”

“What! is he not solid gold?” said the Swallow to himself. He was too polite to make any personal remarks out loud.

“당신은 누구죠?” 제비가 물었습니다.
 
“나는 행복한 왕자란다.”

“그런데 왜 우세요? 당신 때문에 젖었잖아요.”하고 제비가 물었습니다.
 
“내가 살아서 인간의 심장을 가지고 있었을 때는 눈물이 무엇인지 몰랐단다.” 행복한 왕자는 대답했습니다. “나는 슬픔이 발을 들이지 않는 상수시 궁전에 살았어. 낮에는 정원에서 친구들과 놀고, 밤이면 큰 홀에서 춤을 추었지. 궁전 둘레에는 높은 담이 둘러쳐져 있었는데, 그 너머에 뭐가 있는지 한 번도 신경 쓰지 않았어. 내 주위의 모든 것은 참 아름다웠어. 내 신하들은 나를 행복한 왕자라고 불렀는데 즐거운 것이 행복한 거라면 난 진짜 행복했단다. 나는 그렇게 행복하게 살다가 죽었지. 그런데 내가 죽자 사람들이 이 도시의 온갖 추함과 비참함이 다 보이는 높은 곳에다가 나를 세워 놓았단다. 비록 내 심장은 납으로 만들어졌지만 난 눈물을 흘리지 않을 수가 없구나.”

 “뭐라고! 안은 금이 아니었어?”하고 제비는 혼자 말했습니다. 제비는 그런 사사로운 말을 내뱉을 만큼 예의가 없지는 않았습니다.
