영자신문의 광고(classified ads)를 읽다 보면 약어(abbreviations)들이 많이 등장해 이해하기 어려울 때가 많습니다.
이렇게 어떤 글을 보고 ‘이해가 안 된다’고 말할 때는 I can’t make any sense out of ~ 란 표현을 씁니다. 쉽게 I don’t understand ~ 라고 해도 되죠.
참고로 영어의 약어는 experience(경험) →exp, management(관리)→mgmt와 같이 단어의 앞부분이나 모음을 생략해서 만들어지기 때문에 그 단어를 알고 있으면 쉽게 유추할 수 있습니다.

A: Where can I search for job openings?  B: One of the best places to look for available jobs is the classified ads in the newspaper.  A: OK. Here's the ad section. It says '3 yrs exp, incl mgmt pos in hosp…'         What in the world does this mean? I can't make any sense out of it.  B: Those are abbreviations. It means '3 years of experience including management      position in hospital.'

B: 일자리 정보를 구할 수 있는 가장 좋은 곳 중의 하나가 신문의 구직광고죠.

A: 그렇군요. 여기 구직광고란이 있네요. ‘3yrs exp, incl mgmt pos in hosp…’라고 하는데

 이게 도대체 무슨 말이죠? 무슨 소린지 도통 모르겠네요.

B: 그것은 약자예요. ‘3년 경험, 병원에서의 관리직 포함’이란 뜻이죠.
